\nHowever, I will abide by the injunctions of the holy Quran not to engage with the People of the Book but in the most convenient way. Hence, despite my utmost outrage and indignation, it is indeed in this spirit that I am reacting to the recent declarations of the French President.
\nIt is certainly not my obligation to remind him of his role as the guardian of his country\u2019s best interests. He should however have put in balance the defence of the spread of particularly belittling and purposely insulting cartoons, on one hand, and the historical,cultural and economic relations with fifty states and nearly two billion Muslims, including several millions of his own fellow citizens who felt frontally offended and deeply wounded in what they hold as the dearest and most sacred to them, on the other.
\nThe French President\u2019s attitude and comments were indeed both shocking and incomprehensible to many countries and peoples among whom some adopted the French language and do admire French culture, legislation and spirit. All of them were infuriated and saddened seeing the President of the French Republic making such statements in front of the whole world.
\nHowever, even bigger were their disappointment and resentment when the President, far from expressing regrets, let alone apologizing, unequivocally reiterated his endorsement of the spread of the despicable cartoons, under the pretext of defending the freedom of expression. Nobody is asking him not to defend freedom of expression. Still, this freedom can be regulated as was done through the Gayssot anti-Semitism Act, the law on the Holocaust denial and that according to which the periodical Charlie Hebdo\u2019s ancestor, Hara- Kari was banned and closed for publishing a disrespectful cartoon of the late, so admired and respected by the French people, General De Gaulle. Should not the same logic apply to a Prophet (PBUH) cherished and venerated by nearly two billon human beings around the world?
\nThe President also alleged that his statement was misinterpreted and his
\nwords taken out of context. Again, when subsequently on Al Jazeera TV channel he had the opportunity to set the record straight and dispel any misunderstanding, he did not.
\nHe, instead, gave the impression of addressing an islamophobic electorate and not the Muslims he was supposed to appease.
\nFurthermore, while recognizing that over 80 per cent of the victims of terrorism are Muslims, the President invariably associates it to Islam. Like every good Muslim, I firmly condemn terrorism but I deem it an outright injustice to accuse of this phenomenon those who, precisely, are its main victims. Yet, the President surely knows that the real causes of terrorism lie, inter alia, in exclusion, marginalization and above all in the contempt for others\u2019 cultures and beliefs.
\nThe French President\u2019s appearance on Al Jazeera channel did not at all meet the expectations of the Muslims. Quite to the contrary, it reinforced their conviction that he could not care less about their beliefs or their feelings. This attitude may have unfortunate consequences that no sensible person would wish, on France and on its relations with the Islamic world as a whole.
\nSheer wisdom and well thought-out policy would suggest that the French President, eager to serve the best interests of his country and to preserve the strong bonds woven over many centuries between France and the Muslim world, takes it upon himself to make amends, presents excuses to the huge world Muslim community and initiates a legislation criminalizing this kind of publications which do not serve democracy, secularism nor the prestige of France.<\/p>\n

Il ne m\u2019est pas loisible de me taire quand mon Proph\u00e8te bien-aim\u00e9 est en cause. Cependant je m\u2019exprimerai selon les pr\u00e9ceptes du saint Coran qui m\u2019enjoint de discuter avec les Gens du Livre de la mani\u00e8re la plus convenable. C\u2019est bien dans cet esprit que je vais r\u00e9agir aux r\u00e9cents propos du Pr\u00e9sident Fran\u00e7ais, et ce, quelle que profonde soit mon indignation.
\nIl ne m\u2019appartient, \u00e9videmment pas, de lui rappeler son r\u00f4le de garant des int\u00e9r\u00eats sup\u00e9rieurs de son pays. Il aurait cependant d\u00fb mettre en balance la d\u00e9fense de la diffusion de caricatures particuli\u00e8rement diffamatoires et volontairement insultantes et les relations historiques, culturelles et \u00e9conomiques avec cinquante \u00e9tats et avec pr\u00e8s de deux milliards de musulmans, dont plusieurs millions de ses propres concitoyens, qui se sentent offens\u00e9s et bless\u00e9s dans ce qu\u2019ils ont de plus cher et de plus sacr\u00e9.
\nL\u2019attitude et les propos du Pr\u00e9sident fran\u00e7ais ont \u00e9t\u00e9 \u00e0 la fois choquants et incompr\u00e9hensibles pour beaucoup d\u2019\u00e9tats et de peuples dont certains ont adopt\u00e9 la langue de la France, ont admir\u00e9 sa culture, ses lois et son esprit. Tous s\u2019indignent et regrettent que de tels propos soient prononc\u00e9s \u00e0 la face du monde par le Pr\u00e9sident de la France.
\nMais plus grandes encore ont \u00e9t\u00e9 leur d\u00e9ception et leur col\u00e8re lorsque le Pr\u00e9sident fran\u00e7ais, loin d\u2019exprimer des regrets ou, \u00e0 fortiori pr\u00e9senter des excuses, a r\u00e9it\u00e9r\u00e9, sur la cha\u00eene Al Jazeera, son soutien \u00e0 la diffusion des caricatures indignes, arguant qu\u2019il d\u00e9fendait ainsi la libert\u00e9 d\u2019expression. Personne ne lui demande de ne pas la d\u00e9fendre. Mais cette libert\u00e9 peut \u00eatre encadr\u00e9e comme l\u2019a fait la loi Gayssot sur l\u2019antis\u00e9mitisme, ou encore les lois sur le n\u00e9gationnisme, ou m\u00eame la loi qui a permis de fermer et dissoudre Hara-Kiri, l\u2019anc\u00eatre de Charlie Hebdo, lorsqu\u2019il a caricatur\u00e9 de fa\u00e7on irrespectueuse le G\u00e9n\u00e9ral de Gaulle, tant aim\u00e9 et respect\u00e9 par les fran\u00e7ais. Cette m\u00eame logique ne devrait-elle pas s\u2019appliquer au Proph\u00e8te, v\u00e9n\u00e9r\u00e9 par pr\u00e8s de deux milliards de personnes autour de la plan\u00e8te ?
\nLe Pr\u00e9sident a aussi argu\u00e9 de la mauvaise interpr\u00e9tation qui aurait \u00e9t\u00e9 faite de ses propos, dont il a dit qu\u2019ils ont \u00e9t\u00e9 sortis de leur contexte. L\u2019occasion lui a \u00e9t\u00e9 offerte sur Al Jazeera de les expliciter, pour \u00e9viter toute \u00e9quivoque. Il n\u2019en a rien fait. Au contraire il a donn\u00e9 l\u2019impression de s\u2019adresser plus \u00e0 un \u00e9lectorat islamophobe qu\u2019aux musulmans qu\u2019il \u00e9tait cens\u00e9 apaiser.
\nPar ailleurs, tout en reconnaissant que plus de 80% des victimes du terrorisme sont des musulmans, le Pr\u00e9sident associe invariablement celui-ci \u00e0 l\u2019Islam. Comme tout bon musulman, je condamne fermement le terrorisme et je trouve profond\u00e9ment injuste d\u2019en rendre responsable ceux qui en sont les principales victimes. Le Pr\u00e9sident n\u2019ignore pourtant pas que les causes r\u00e9elles du terrorisme sont, entre autres : la marginalisation, l\u2019exclusion et surtout le m\u00e9pris de la culture et des croyances des autres.
\nL\u2019intervention du Pr\u00e9sident fran\u00e7ais sur Al Jazeera est loin d\u2019avoir satisfait les musulmans. Elle a, au contraire, renforc\u00e9 chez eux la conviction qu\u2019il ne se soucie point de ce qu\u2019ils pensent ou de ce qu\u2019ils ressentent. Cette attitude peut avoir de f\u00e2cheuses cons\u00e9quences, qu\u2019aucune personne sens\u00e9e ne souhaite, sur la France et sur ses relations avec l\u2019ensemble du monde islamique.
\nLa sagesse et la politique bien comprise dicteraient que le Pr\u00e9sident fran\u00e7ais, soucieux de servir au mieux les int\u00e9r\u00eats sup\u00e9rieurs de son pays et de pr\u00e9server les liens de toutes sortes tiss\u00e9s au cours des si\u00e8cles avec le monde musulman, prenne sur lui, pr\u00e9sente ses excuses \u00e0 cette immense communaut\u00e9 et initie une loi qui criminalise ce type de publications qui ne sert ni la d\u00e9mocratie, ni la la\u00efcit\u00e9 et qui ne grandit en aucun cas la France<\/p>\n
